Saxophonist/composer Tim Shaghoian was born in Fresno, California. Soft-spoken yet resolute, Tim has developed a unique voice as an improviser and composer. In 2015, he recorded his first work as a co-leader with the avant-garde saxophone trio TTRC. The EP, Sunset EP, was recorded at the famed Los Angeles recording studio Sunset Sound. Tim formed his current California-based quintet in 2018 and recorded his debut album, Gentle Beacons, in August of 2019. Gentle Beacons features 9 of Tim's original compositions and a creative reimagining of the beloved jazz standard My Foolish Heart. The album will be released on March 20, 2020 on OA2 Records.
Tim holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he studied with renowned modern Jazz saxophonist Peter Epstein. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Jazz Performance at California State University, Fresno. In conjunction with his studies at the university, he holds a teaching associate position in the jazz studies program where he instructs small ensembles, large ensembles, and ear training. Tim co-directs the Kastner Intermediate School jazz choir and is on the Milestones Youth Jazz Workshop faculty instructing some of the central valley's most promising young jazz musicians. In addition, he is on the board of directors for La Sierra Creative Arts Camp, where he teaches woodwinds and jazz improvisation. Over the last number of years Tim has mentored numerous young saxophonists and improvisers across the west coast through private instruction and workshops.
